Two Suspected Fraudsters Remanded in Kampala

The Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court has sent on remand, David Balondemu, the Kampala District Land Board Chairperson and his accomplice identified as Joseph Ibona.

The accused were recently arrested by detectives attached to the State House Anti-Corruption Unit and arraigned in court on November 20, 2023, to answer charges of obtaining Money by False Pretence and Conspiracy to Commit a Felony.

According to the charge sheet presented by the prosecution team, the accused and others still at large while operating under a law firm M/S Bloom Advocates obtained over UGX 2.2Bn from an American company, KG Unlimited LLC, by falsely pretending that they were going to award it a contract of supplying agricultural drone sprayers and fertilizers from Ministry of Agriculture where as not.

They have been remanded until November 22, 2023, when they will reappear before the same court.

It is alleged that Balondemu got $600,000 (about UGX 2.2Bn) in his offices of M/S Balondemu & Co Advocates along Parliamentary Avenue by fabricating a story about selling 53 kilograms of gold to Hyun Uk Kim, which was untrue.

Balondemu is charged with utilizing his legal knowledge to craft a complex plan that persuaded the Korean nationals to give up the funds.

The accused was recently charged, granted bail, then re-arrested on November 17, 2023, and taken into custody.
