Two police officers attached to Muhanga Police Station are facing disciplinary action after a video allegedly showing them extorting money from civilians surfaced on social media and quickly went viral on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.
The officers have been identified as No. 73027 Police Constable Akech Gorrete and No. 77063 Police Constable Omara Sam.
Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, strongly condemns acts of extortion, particularly for services that are legally mandated to be free.
He issued a stern warning to any other officers involved in similar misconduct, stating that such behavior would result in criminal charges.
ASP Maate confirmed that immediate disciplinary action had been initiated by the Rukiga District Police Commander (DPC). The two officers are being charged with discreditable conduct, under case reference number Muhanga SD REF. 13/04/06/2025.
“A Police Disciplinary case file is being compiled, and the officers will be tried before the District Disciplinary Committee,” Maate said .
He further encouraged members of the public particularly those directly affected by the incident to report to the Regional Police Headquarters in Kabale and submit formal complaints to aid the ongoing investigations.
The video’s circulation has sparked public outrage and renewed concerns about corruption and abuse of authority within the police force, especially in rural areas where communities often feel vulnerable to misconduct by law enforcement personnel.
As of press time, the Uganda Police Force had not disclosed the full contents of the video, but confirmed it played a role in initiating the disciplinary process.
