On Friday, September 19, 2025, the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) received two modern electric buses from Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC), marking a major step toward greener transport in Uganda.
The buses were officially handed over by the Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Monica Musenero, during the National E-Mobility Expo held at the Kiira Vehicle Plant in Jinja.
UCAA said the new electric buses will improve how passengers move around the airport and support efforts to make the aviation sector more environmentally friendly. The move also supports the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
“This is a step toward greener and more efficient airport operations,” said UCAA spokesperson Vianney Luggya. “It shows our commitment to the global fight against climate change.”
Each bus can carry up to 64 passengers and travel up to 500 kilometers on a single charge. They will be used at Entebbe International Airport to transport passengers and staff between terminals.
“By using electric buses, we are not only cutting emissions but also showing that innovation can improve service delivery,” Luggya added.
While handing over the buses, Dr. Musenero praised Kiira Motors for leading local efforts to solve global problems.
“These buses show Uganda’s ability to innovate in clean transport,” she said. “This is more than just transportation, it proves that Ugandan engineers can deliver.”
Kiira Motors CEO Paul Isaac Musasizi highlighted the performance of the buses. “With their long range and modern battery systems, these buses are perfect for busy places like airports. They also help reduce running costs,” he said. “We’re proud to work with UCAA to promote clean energy.”
This handover is part of Uganda’s wider plan to grow electric mobility across the country. With Kiira’s electric buses already in use in other areas, Uganda is positioning itself as a regional leader in green transport and aiming to make Entebbe Airport a model for eco-friendly aviation.
