Gen Henry Tumukunde has triumphed in the NRM primaries for the Rukungiri Municipality Member of Parliament seat, defeating incumbent Hon Dr Elisa Rutahirwa and securing the party’s flag for the 2026 general elections.
Tumukunde emerged victorious with 4,517 votes, which accounted for 45.6% of the total votes cast. Rutahirwa, the sitting MP, garnered 2,843 votes (28.7%), marking a clear defeat in what was expected to be a tough contest.
The official results were declared early this morning at 5:20 a.m. by the Rukungiri NRM District Elections Officer, Bright Mwongyera, at the tally center in the Rukungiri District Council Hall.
“Gen. Henry Tumukunde has won the Rukungiri Municipality MP NRM flag with a total of 4,517 votes,” Mwongyera said.
In addition to Tumukunde and Rutahirwa, the race saw several other candidates competing for the NRM ticket. Isaac Atukunda received 1,658 votes (16.7%), Andrew Ankunda Kikira obtained 736 votes (7.4%), Nathan Kamugisha Akandwanaho earned 101 votes (1.0%), and Kabano Apolo finished last with 49 votes (0.5%).
The total number of valid votes cast was 9,905, with the election results being officially handed over to Tumukunde’s representative, George Owakukiroru.
