A car accident in Nateete Market has left one person dead and several others injured. The incident occurred when a Mitsubishi Pajero lost control and crashed into pedestrians before colliding with a nearby building.

The accident took place around noon on September 3, 2024, when the vehicle, registered as UAW 384L, struck a man identified as Kayondo, who was working as a goods carrier and matooke offloader. Eyewitnesses say Kayondo was offloading matooke from a parked truck when the out-of-control car hit him, killing him instantly.

Witnesses reported that the driver may have experienced mechanical issues, particularly with the brakes, which led to the loss of control.

Jeff Kiwa, a local resident, suggested that reckless driving in the busy market area also contributed to the tragedy. He explained that many drivers do not slow down in this crowded place, making accidents more likely.

“This road is always busy, motorists often drive at high speeds without considering the people around them, and that is why this accident happened,” Kiwa said.

This accident comes after police released a report on September 2, 2024, about road accidents that have killed people. In the report, Traffic and Road Safety Directorate Spokesperson SP Michael Kananura revealed that from August 25-31, 2024, 98 people have died in road accidents from various districts, and more than 336 people have been admitted in various hospitals but with severe injuries.

“Accidents are often caused by reckless driving, such as unsafe overtaking and speeding. We urge all motorists to drive responsibly, especially in busy areas, to prevent further tragedies,” Kananura stated.

As the community mourns the loss of Kayondo, safety officials continue to remind drivers of the importance of following traffic regulations to avoid similar accidents in the future.
