As Uganda gears up to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 from August 2 to 29, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has unveiled a comprehensive traffic management plan to accommodate the surge in vehicle movement and ensure smooth urban mobility across Kampala and Entebbe.

The biannual tournament, organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), will draw teams from across the continent, along with officials from CAF, FUFA, FIFA, and thousands of fans, putting Uganda’s transport infrastructure to the test.

Speaking at the Uganda Police headquarters in Naguru on Monday, July 28, Traffic Police Spokesperson SSP Micheal Kananura detailed the routes, hotel locations, training venues, and traffic diversion points that will be enforced during the event.

According to Kananura, participating teams will be hosted at top hotels, including Speke Resort Munyonyo, FUFA Hotel Kisaasi, Serena Hotel Kampala, Mestil Hotel, Golden Tulip, Skyz Hotel Naguru, and Four Points by Sheraton. Dedicated corridors from Entebbe International Airport to these hotels will be secured by lead vehicles and escort motorcycles to facilitate uninterrupted convoys.

Teams heading to Mestil Hotel will travel through the Entebbe Expressway, connecting to the Northern Bypass via Bwaise Interchange and then proceed through Mulago, Yusuf Lule Road, and Mukwano Road.

Those destined for Serena Hotel Kampala will use the same expressway and bypass route before connecting through Fairway, Golf Course, and UBC Roundabout.

Teams going to Speke Resort Munyonyo will directly connect via the Entebbe Expressway through the Kajjansi Interchange. For those heading to Skyz Hotel Naguru and FUFA Hotel Kisaasi, the designated routes combine the Expressway, Northern Bypass, and roads through Bukoto and Kira.

Matches will be hosted at Mandela National Stadium in Namboole, while training sessions will take place at various venues, including Kyambogo University, Wankulukuku Stadium, Kisu Grounds in Bukoto, FUFA Grounds in Mengo, and the Namboole Annex.

Kananura said access to parking around the stadiums and training grounds will be strictly limited to individuals with official accreditation. The traffic police will guide vehicles to VIP and general parking areas, with the southern wing of Mandela Stadium reserved exclusively for VIPs.

There will be a diversion of all trucks from Kinawataka to prevent access to Kireka. Additionally, all vehicles from Bweyogerere will be redirected to Jokas Hotel via Kinawataka Road. A cut-off point will be enforced at Hared Petrol Station on Kinawataka Road, restricting access to Kireka Trading Centre. This restriction will apply to all categories of vehicles.

Furthermore, the road stretch from Kireka to Nansanga Junction, up to Jokas Hotel, will be accessible only to pedestrians and no vehicles will be allowed to use this section.

Kananura urged motorists to comply with traffic officers, avoid restricted routes, and plan their journeys in advance to prevent delays.

“We strongly urge all motorists and road users to comply fully with all directives issued by the traffic officers deployed. Exercise maximum discipline, patience and courtesy on the roads,” he said.

Michael Kananura said that the cooperation of all road users was vital to the success and safety of the prestigious continental event.

“Let us work together to demonstrate Uganda’s hospitality, discipline, and readiness to host Africa,” he said.

The traffic police will be heavily deployed across all designated routes to ensure seamless movement and maximum safety for both the public and CHAN 2024 participants.
