The Directorate of Safety and Traffic Police has arrested a total of 236 drivers during the festive season for violating road traffic guidelines.
Michael Kananura, the traffic police spokesperson, confirmed the number of drivers arrested while giving a status report of the festive season on December 30, 2024, at the police headquarters at Naguru.
He stated that a total of 236 drivers were arrested between December 23 and 30, 2024.
According to the report, among the 236 drivers, 78 were arrested for driving without licenses, 110 for driving past the stipulated speed limits, 16 for driving under the influence of alcohol, and 32 for reckless driving, including unsafe overtaking.
However, unlike other years, the number of accidents was relatively low on Ugandan roads during the Christmas period, attributing this to sensitization and operation done by police.
Kananura added the enforcement of driver badges and route charts, aiding the police in limiting drivers making unnecessary return journeys.
He also explained that most accidents were caused by fatigued drivers making return journeys, adding that by enforcing route charts, this was prevented.
Police continuous enforcement of route charts for bus drivers, coasters, and taxi drivers was one of the ways of reducing accidents on roads during the festive season.
