A vocal local councillor at the Lira city council, Sarah Awor Angweri, has been sent to Lira Central Government Prison on allegations of theft of over Ugx 9 million.
Awor appeared before the Lira District Chief Magistrate, Samson Loum Abiti, on Thursday, February 15, 2024, to answer allegations of theft of money meant to compensate an employee of Mt. Meru Millers, a local factory in Lira City.
Jacinta Awor, a former causal worker of Mt. Meru Millers, had accused the suspect of failing to remit to her the sum of over Ugx 9 million, which was paid to compensate her for an acid burn she had sustained while working at the factory.
A police investigation pinned Angweri, who reportedly helped Awor secure the payment from the company, for not remitting the pay to the victim.
“The victim was later compensated with a sum of shillings 9.1 million by Mt. Meru Millers, which was paid through a cheque to the accused’s bank account, but ever since, she has failed to remit it to the victim,” the investigation report read.
The report further revealed that Angweri reportedly took Awor to the bank and withdrew the money after the cheque had matured but later fled with all the money, a move that prompted the victim to report to police.
