‘Presumed human remains’ are believed to have been found within the Titan Submersible wreckage.
This comes after debris from the craft was brought ashore earlier on Wednesday.
The US Coast Guards said that on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, new pictures showed several pieces of metal debris being unloaded from the ship Horizon Arctic at the Canadian Coast Guard pier St. John’s Newfound.
Officials believe that five men, including three British citizens, died when the submersible suffered a “catastrophic” impulsion while attempting to view the wreck of the Titanic.
In a statement, the US Coast Guard said, “United States medical professionals will conduct a formal analysis of presumed human remains that have been carefully recovered within the wreckage at the site of the incident.”
“US Medical professionals will analyse the presumed human remains after they are “carefully recovered” from debris found on the sea floor,” .
Professor Susanne Neuer, a biological oceanographer from Arizona State University said that the implosion was likely rapid and “very quickly fatal” due to the enormous pressure deep in the ocean.
Captain Jason Neubauer who is leading the probe said it was a “priority” to salvage debris after pieces of the vessel were found about 487m (1,600ft) from the wreck of the Titanic in the Atlantic.
A frantic search and rescue operation began on June 18, 2023, after the Titan lost communication with its mother ship, the Polar Prince, an hour and 45 minutes into the two-hour descent to the wreckage.
The vessel was reported missing eight hours after communication was lost.
