When you come into contact with a person or a particular group of people, the first thing they will notice is your skin, being the biggest organ in the body.

If one has skin insecurities like acne, they tend to be uncomfortable in such a situation and in worst case scenarios hide from the public for fear of being ashamed.

According to the Global Acne Market Report for 2016-2026, more  than 90 percent of world population is affected by acne at some point in their life, lead to emotional and psychological torture.

Today I will be sharing some of the common tips on how to have a healthy skin.

Good hydration: Drinking at least 2-3 liters of water will definitely change the appearance of your skin because it flushes out toxins that can cause build up, leading to acne issues like pimples and black heads. Regular fluids intake also maintains skin elasticity.

Eat lots of fruit: Fruits contain vitamins A, B, C, D, E, and K which are good for our skin.  Vitamins D, C, E, and K, in particular are known to be in almost every skin care product there is. Fruits like pineapples, watermelon, blueberries, strawberries, apples, bananas, kiwi, to mention but a few will improve one our skin’s health.

Eat fermented food: Fermented foods have bacteria that keeps one’s skin healthy and soft. Incorporate Kombucha, yoghurt, Apple cider vinegar, Sauerkraut, cheese and thank me later.

Good hygiene: One of the most neglected skin care health tip is good hygiene. Make sure you regularly change your beddings, more so the pillowcases because oils and sweat tend to build up on them and if not changed, will definitely give you acne. One can change once a week.

Sauna: Visiting the sauna once in a while will clean your pores, balance the PH of your skin and remove dirt and bacteria from your skin.

According to Dr. Muneeb Shah, a dermatologist by profession, and a skin social media influencer, knowing your skin type before purchasing any skin care products is the way to go. “If you do not know your skin type, visit a dermatologist to identify your skin type and also guide you on the best skin care routine,” Dr Shah says.

Lastly, for good skin care, buy a gentle cleanser, a good moisturizer and apply sunscreen on your skin. As Africans we have all sort of misconceptions on sunscreen but that is a story we shall indulge ourselves next time.
