The government has heightened security measures at Namugongo Shrines by deploying over 7,000 security operatives to deliver safety of pilgrims during the annual Marty’s celebration on 3rd June 2025 in Kampala.

The operatives, drawn from both overt and covert security units within the Uganda Police Force, Special Forces Command, UPDF, Intelligence Agencies are stationed across key locations to ensure the safety of pilgrims and their property during the high-profile event.

The deployment was confirmed by Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Frank Mwesigwa, the Director of Police Operations, during an inspection of security preparations at the Anglican and Catholic shrines on Friday.

“We have put in place robust security arrangements involving standby teams, mobile squads, plainclothes operatives, air defense, and medical units,” said AIGP Mwesigwa.

He says the multi-agency deployment will guarantee a safe environment for all pilgrims.

Sources within the security establishment revealed that the deployment includes personnel from the Uganda Police Force’s Counter-Terrorism Unit, Bomb Squad, K9 Unit, and Crime Intelligence, in addition to uniformed officers maintaining public order.

In preparation for any emergencies, medical response teams have also been stationed on-site, with fully equipped ambulances on standby.

Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, who attended a joint inter-agency security and health briefing with AIGP Mwesigwa earlier in the week, confirmed that emergency medical services would be readily available throughout the event.

“We have ensured that ambulances and medical personnel are fully deployed to respond to any emergencies that may occur during the celebrations,” said Dr. Aceng.

The annual Martyrs’ Day celebration, held every 3rd of June, honors the memory of 45 Ugandan Christians who were executed between 1885 and 1887 for their faith. The event draws tens of thousands of pilgrims each year and is one of the largest religious gatherings in East Africa.
