The Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon Thomas Tayebwa has suspended five National Unity Platform Members of Parliament from attending plenary sitting for three days, due to misconduct while in parliament.

This development was confirmed on October 17, 2023, as  Betty Nambooze MP Mukono Municipality, Joyce Bagala, Mityana District Woman Representative, Derrick Nyeko of Makindye East, Frank Kabuye MP Kassanda South and Francis Zaake representing Mityana were suspended.

The suspension followed  an escalation in Parliament when Leader of Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga informed the house that the technical officer at parliament charged with playing the video that had been submitted by the Opposition had disappeared.

Isaac Otimgiw, the Padyere County representative then  asked the Deputy Speaker to put the matter of whether the video submitted by the Opposition showing evidence of Police brutality against the NUP supporters should be put to a vote as was the case with the Zaake-Kinyamatama video last week.

Tayebwa was forced to suspend Parliament for 10 minutes after the Staff meant to play the video disappeared from the technical production room of Parliament.

After Parliament resumed, the 5 NUP  parliamentarians caused chaos as they demanded that the video should be played.

The Deputy Speaker was then forced to adjourn Parliament to  October 18, 2023 and suspend the 5 NUP MP’s for three days for misconduct while plenary sitting proceeds.

The Deputy Speaker invoked Rule 89(4), which states that if a member is suspended, his or her suspension in the first occasion in a session shall be for the next three sitting, excluding the sitting in which he or she was suspended.
