Tanga Odoi’s Son Removed from Top NRM Position

“Given the tainted tally and unreliable record, none of the petitioners can be declared duly elected. The proper remedy is to nullify the election and direct a fresh poll,” the Tribunal said.

After serious consultation, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Election Disputes Tribunal has nullified the election of Collins Tanga as Chairperson of the NRM Youth League, citing irregularities.

In its ruling, signed by Tribunal Chairperson John Musiime and members Esau Isingoma and Diana Kasabiiti the panel invoked Regulation 45(6), which empowers it to void polls where noncompliance has substantially affected results.

“Given the tainted tally and unreliable record, none of the petitioners can be declared duly elected. The proper remedy is to nullify the election and direct a fresh poll,” the Tribunal said.

In a striking order, the tribunal panel barred NRM Electoral Commission chairperson Dr Tanga Odoi from presiding over or participating in the rerun. It emphasized that the Commission, as a collegiate body, is able to conduct the election without him.

Additionally, the Electoral Commission was directed to conduct a fresh poll in strict compliance with the NRM Constitution, Election Regulations and Polling Guidelines.

The Youth League, widely regarded as the backbone of NRM’s mobilization efforts, is central to energizing young voters ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The Tribunal’s decision is seen as a unifying measure, restoring confidence and ensuring that the next Youth League leadership emerges from a clean contest.

Analysts note that the NRM Youth league has always been a breeding ground for future leaders and mobilisers, and any act of unfairness could have risked disunity.

The Tribunal’s move, therefore, is being cast as a corrective measure meant to bring unity among the disunited youth before the next national contest.

“This ruling shows that the party is willing to listen to grievances and resolve them openly. That is how unity is built,” John an NRM youth delegate told reporters after the decision.

With the nullification, the spotlight now turns to the Electoral Commission’s remaining members, who must deliver a credible rerun.
