It is crucial for local government and transport authorities to implement stricter regulations and enforce penalties for dangerous driving behaviors because the community's safety depends on a collective effort to mitigate such incidents.
The National Traffic and Safety Authority (NTSA) has estimated that 3,000 people die in road accidents every year, with many of the accidents occurring on weekends and public holidays in the hours between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m., which are considered the peak times for accidents, with drink driving and carelessness cited as some of the main causes of accidents.
The Uganda Police Traffic and Road Safety Directorate report indicates that from July 7–13, 2024, 81 people died and 301 sustained injuries in road accidents resulting from careless overtaking and overspeeding.
