The MUFTI of Uganda, Mufti Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, has asked the government to immediately intervene and regulate TikTok.
TikTok is a social media platform that allows users to create, share, and discover short-form videos that originated in China under the name Douyin. It is the brainchild of ByteDance, a Beijing-based technology company.
While delivering a special summons to thousands of Muslim believers during the prayers to celebrate Eid Al-Fitr at the Old Kampala Mosque on Sunday, March 30th, 2025, Sheikh Mubaje said TikTok is being used to misguide Muslim communities.

“The government of Uganda closed Facebook, but I think TikTok is worse. I was recently in a country where TikTok is not there, and then I said, This is good. In Uganda, TikTok is not regulated; it is for idlers, for content seekers, and people who have nonsense to communicate. It should be closed,” Sheikh Mubaje said.
According to him, once not strictly regulated, TikTok will soon erupt into violence, adding that it is being used by those misleading Muslim communities.
“The sheikhs on TikTok are misguiding the Muslim communities; they should be stopped. They are using it to disorganize and mislead Muslims,” Mubaje adds.
He cautioned Muslim communities to remain united, peace-loving, and caring even after the holy month of Ramadan and continue upholding the five pillars of Islam.
Mubaje further warned Muslim believers against misusing social media to cause confusion and insult and abuse one another.
“Let’s not misuse social media to insult and abuse one another and create instability among our community in Uganda,” Sheikh Mubaje said.
Thousands of Muslim communities in Uganda joined the rest of their colleagues around the world to celebrate Eid Al-Fitr with calls for peace and unity around the world.
