Ssese museum, found on Buggala Island in Kalangala town council in Kalangala district, was opened in December 2020, and John Ssempebwa is the Executive Director.

Ssese Islands is on Lake Victoria only a few hours away from Kampala, the busy capital of Uganda, and it offers a holiday paradise. This archipelago of all together 84 islands holds treasures like white beaches, tropical forests and wild animals like vervet monkeys, sitatunga antelopes and several rare bird species.

Kalangala district is comprised of vast hidden tourism sites with 62 of the islands being habitable. However, tourism is currently limited to Buggala Island, the biggest of the 84. Despite attracting several tourists, Ssese museum is the only museum that has the remains and historicals of all the islands in Kalangala.

Some of the objects exhibited in the museum include historical books, boat, Redbittles, a delicacy among the natives, spears and arrows used in traditional shrines, among others.

John Ssempebwa, the Executive Director of Ssese museum said that, the museum is aimed at boosting tourism through availing information on the traditions and history of the islands in the district.
