A speeding truck has killed an elephant in Murchison Falls National Park along the Karuma-Pakwach highway on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.

According to the Uganda Wild Life Authority (UWA), the speeding truck registration number UBP 616E highlights the ongoing conflict between vehicle traffic and wildlife in the park.

“We remind you that when driving through and adjacent to wildlife-rich zones, please always make a conscious effort to slow down and prioritize the right of way for our wild friends,” UWA warned.

This diversion was implemented to facilitate vehicle transit while repairs are conducted. UWA established guidelines for motorists, allowing entry into the park until 6 PM daily, with strict speed limits enforced to protect wildlife and ensure visitor safety.

This incident is part of a troubling trend, as increased vehicle movement, especially from large trucks, poses significant risks to wildlife, leading to injuries and fatalities among animals like elephants.

Conservationists have also been seen calling for stricter enforcement of speed limits and better traffic management to protect the park’s biodiversity and prevent further collisions.
