The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Anita Among, has rescheduled the meeting with the Leader of Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga, and the Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission, Mariam Wangadya, due to the failure of the Chairperson to come with fellow Commissioners whom she runs UHRC.

The Speaker made these remarks while meeting both Wangadya and LOP at her office in Parliament, where she said that the chairperson didn’t comply with the requirements asked to conduct the meeting and instead came with two technical officers.

According to Among, the meeting was preparatory to another one scheduled later this month, which will involve the entire membership of the Uganda Human Rights Commission, the police leadership, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

According to Mpuuga, the anticipated meeting meant to discuss issues of missing persons didn’t take place because the commissioners supposed to accompany Wandagya were allegedly conducting hearings upcountry.

Mpuuga promised to explore all the available avenues and get to the bottom of the abductions and enforced disappearances of people in the next anticipated meeting.

On October 19, 2023, the opposition elected to boycott Plenary over the unabated human rights violations and shrinking civic space. Prior to the boycott, Wandagya provided a report on the suspected 30 missing National Unity Platform (NUP) Party members, of whom 18 were reported missing in the period from 2020 to 2023.
