Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has called on Asia and Africa to play a more proactive role in shaping international law, stressing the need to prioritize sustainable development, sovereignty, and justice.
According to Speaker Among, the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) is uniquely positioned to ensure that Asia and Africa do not merely react to global legal developments but actively shape them to reflect the priorities of member states.
In advocating for unity, the speaker, however, acknowledged the current global challenges, including climate change, insecurity, economic inequality, and rapid technological change, which need urgent attention.
“Its role is more critical than ever, ensuring that our continents’ perspectives are not only heard but integrated into the global legal order,” she said.
Among, who was officiating the 63rd Annual Session of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) made these remarks on behalf of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at Speke Resort Munyonyo on Monday September 8th, 2025.
The AALCO President H.E. Suphanvasa Chotikajan Tang revealed that after nearly 70 years since its founding, AALCO remains the only permanent forum where Asia and Africa come together to shape international law.
Established in 1956 after the Bandung Conference, AALCO has grown into a key advisory body for Asia and Africa on matters of international law, with notable contributions to frameworks such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties.
“It has addressed colonial legacies, guided digital, trade, and climate challenges. In addition, AALCO has proven itself an indispensable platform for dialogue and cooperation,” Tang remarked.
“Our diversity is our strength; the enduring legacy of AALCO rests upon solidarity, trust, and cooperation,” he added.
The week-long session will feature deliberations on climate change, human rights, migrant protection, trade, and the legal implications of emerging technologies.
