The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. Anita Among, has rescinded her earlier decision to suspend plenary sittings until next week and has now called Members of Parliament for a special sitting on Thursday, July 25, 2024, to pay tribute to former Moroto Municipality MP, Simon Peter Aleper.

A notice issued by the Clerk to Parliament, Adolf Mwesige Kasaija, on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, confirmed that the House would reconvene at 2:00 p.m. to commemorate Aleper, who died on July 23, 2024, following a road crash on Tirinyi Road in Eastern Uganda.

Earlier on Wednesday, Speaker Among unexpectedly called off plenary sessions for the week until Tuesday, July 30, 2024, leaving the Parliamentarians and the public puzzled about the reasons behind her decision.

Former Moroto Municipality legislator Simon Peter Aleper was killed in an accident along the Iganga-Tirinyi highway on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at around 1:00 a.m.

Aleper served in the last parliament, was the vice chairperson for the NRM for the Karamoja region, and was a member of the Central Executive Committee (CEC).

According to Busoga East police, Aleper was driving a V8 motor vehicle, registration number UAP 787Q, as he was traveling from Mbale when he collided with an unknown motor vehicle heading from Iganga.
