The Democratic Party (DP) has tasked the government with solving and tracking youth problems instead of making accountability of solutions made.

During the party’s weekly press release that took place on August 13, 2024, at the party branch offices in Balintumwa, Kampala, Ismail Kiirya, the party acting spokesperson, who is also the president of the Young Democratic Union of Africa, stated that how the country celebrates International Youth Day is not how it is supposed to be celebrated.

“We are supposed to find out the main issues that our youth face, find solutions to these issues, and track how these solutions have helped the youth in the next Youth Day celebrations. Let’s appreciate and look through the achievements of the youth for the whole year,” he noted.

Ismail stated that the government should be able to follow up on how the programs meant to help the youth get a livelihood.

“Government programs like Emyooga and Youth Livelihood programs should be followed up to see if the youth are really benefiting from them. The government can tell the country the number of youth who have directly benefited from these programs,” he added.

He suggested that the Nation Youth Council (NYC) be made an independent organ instead of patronizing it.

“The NYC should be independent to be able to gather all youth despite their political party affiliations. Most youth fear reporting directly to the NYC because it is a government body,” he added.

The International Youth Day Celebrations were held on August 12, 2024, at Soroti Core Primary Teachers’ College in Soroti District.

The president of Uganda, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who was the Chief Guest, called upon the youth of Uganda to take an active role in fighting corruption, emphasizing the importance of utilizing proper channels rather than resorting to protests.
