Soltilo Bright Stars FC Relegated from UPL after 11-Year Topflight Stay

Soltilo Bright Stars FC were officially relegated from the Uganda Premier League following a 1-0 defeat to UPDF FC on Tuesday 6th may 2025 at the Bombo Military Barracks Grounds, ending their 11-year stay in topflight football.

This blow by Joseph Jjanjali, whose solitary strike handed UPDF FC the victory and confirmed Bright Stars’ relegation.

The result, coupled with Mbarara City’s 1-0 win over Wakiso Giants, sealed Bright Stars’ fate with three matches left in the 2024/25 season.

From the start of the season, the club showed signs of decline, struggling to maintain competitiveness amid a string of player departures. Key names like goalkeeper Hassan Matovu, Gideon Etou, Derrick Kiggundu, Ashiraf Mulindi, Simon Ssemayange, and Joseph Marvin Youngman who returned to Vipers in January left a glaring void in the squad.

The crisis deepened when head coach Joseph Mutyaba was sacked mid-season, and no replacement was appointed. Instead, technical director Ian Mutenda assumed temporary responsibilities without a formal coaching structure in place.

Bright Stars currently sit second-last on the table with just 16 points, confirming their drop alongside Mbale Heroes FC, who were relegated last week.

The club now has to restructure and plan for the next season.
