Police in Sheema District have arrested two suspects involved in the gruesome murder by strangulation of a 72-year-old retired educationist.
The arrests happened on September 19, 2024, in Kyabugimbi sub-county in Sheema district, and the suspects have been identified as Hanning Byesiza and Godious Nuwagaba, who are currently detained at Sheema Central Police Station, joining three suspects who had been arrested earlier, bringing the total number of suspects to five.
The other arrested suspects are Victor Magezi, a 22-year-old herdsman of the deceased; Stuart Turyasingura, a 20-year-old herdsman; and Stephen Kato, a 17-year-old student and worker at the deceased’s home.
These five are key suspects in the brutal murder of Godfrey Nyehangane Tabandama, a retired teacher and resident of Nyamiyaga Cell, Kakunyu Ward in Sheema Municipality.
According to preliminary reports, Nyehangane was killed on September 18, 2024, in the night; however, his body was discovered on September 19, 2024, after ASP Consilanta Kasule, the DPC of Sheema, received a phone call from Daniel Tashobya Kamugisha, a resident of Nyamiyaga, who reported that unknown assailants had attacked, killed Nyehangane, and stolen several household items afterward from his house.
In an interview with journalists, the Greater Bushenyi Police spokesperson, SP Martial Tumusiime, revealed that a canine unit and officers were sent to the deceased’s house, and the sniffer dogs led police to the workers’ quarters where Magezi, Kato, and Turyasingura were staying.
SP Tumusiime added that when police entered Nyehangane’s home, they found his body overturned with his legs tied; however, upon inspection of the body, blood was found oozing from his mouth and nose, suggesting suffocation as the likely cause of death.
‘’No other visible injuries were found on the deceased; however, his flat-screen TV phone and various household items were stolen from the deceased’s house after his brutal death,’’ SP Tumusiime stated.
SP Tumusiime added that the deceased’s body was taken to Kabwohe Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination as investigations continue.
