The inadequate number of licensed sex therapists in Uganda has continued impeding psychological services offered to people suffering from hypersexuality or compulsive sexual behaviour.
Sexual addiction is an intense focus on sexual fantasies, urges or behaviors that can’t be controlled and this often result into mental distress and could cause problems for your health, job, relationships or other parts of your life.
Dr. Misaki Wayengera, a renowned Ugandan physician, academician, and medical researcher, also the head of genetics and genomics unit at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, said obsessive sexual behaviour goes beyond desire and it’s difficult to live with.
Wayengera said “sexual addiction” can be best treated or managed through sexual therapeutic services which is a specialized form of psychotherapy and it builds on the foundation of traditional talk therapy to encompass a wide range of sexual topics, including sexual anxiety, erectile dysfunction, difficulty achieving or maintaining arousal, challenges communicating with your sexual partner, and much more.
He however noted that lack of competent sex therapists in Uganda may continue to threaten quality services to those suffering from such state.
According to Dr Wayengera, this illness is manageable through a professional service and long-term treatment.
He noted that such sexual cravings can strain relationships and make work and school harder.
“Despite your best efforts, suppressing these impulses may seem impossible. Sex addiction isn’t a choice, despite its stigma,” said Dr. Wayengera.
Dr. Wayengera recommends that seeking the services of a licensed professional who can help with the mental or emotional aspects of sex-related issues is critical since they have a thorough understanding of human sexuality and use psychotherapy (talk therapy) to help you work through sexual issues.
A report by the World Health Organization revealed that hypersexuality may increase with a frontal brain lesion, tumor, or seizure disease.
