The territorial maritime police in Amolatar District have confirmed a tragic boat accident that claimed the lives of seven people on Lake Kyoga. The incident happened on September 19, 2025, at around 11:00 AM near Kiryanga Village, Kiryanga Parish in Acii Sub-county.
The boat, which was carrying 36 people, capsized after hitting a tree stump about 400 meters from the Kiryanga landing site. According to police, 29 people survived the accident. The passengers were traveling from Muchora Abino A Village to escort a catechist attending a burial ceremony in Kiryanga Village.

One adult male has not yet been identified.
All the bodies have been taken to the mortuary at Amolatar Health Centre IV for post-mortem examination.
Water transport safety continues to be a serious concern in the region. Statistics show that on large bodies of water like Lake Victoria, Africa’s biggest lake, around 5,000 people die each year. These accidents are often linked to poor infrastructure, weak enforcement of regulations, and environmental hazards.
