SERERE: 75-year-old Woman Killed by Nephew over Tamarind Seeds

Police in Serere district are investigating the tragic death of 75-year-old Meldo Atigo, who was attacked by his nephew, Solomon Emitu, over tamarind seeds.

The incident took place on September 19, 2024, in Ariet village, Omagoro parish, Kyere sub-county, Serere District. The struggle caught the attention of nearby villagers, who rushed to the scene to save the old woman, all in vain.

The LC1 chairperson of Ariet Village notified the police, who rushed to investigate the matter.

According to East Kyoga Police Spokesperson, Edison Obukulem, Emitu went to pick tamarind seeds from the tree in their ancestral land, and when the deceased tried to stop the suspect, he got annoyed, went home, picked a panga, and cut her neck, which killed her instantly.

According to Obukulem, the lifeless body of Atigo was taken to Serere Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination, and the suspect is on the run.

He thus called upon members of the public to provide information on the suspect, if any, and assured them that the law enforcement officers are doing everything within their power to capture the suspect and bring him to justice.
