Security operatives in the Karamoja sub region have recovered three firearms during cordon and search operations.
Mike Longole, the Mount Moroto regional Police Spokesperson, said that the guns were recovered from armed criminals in Amudat and Moroto districts.
He said that, the operation stemmed from the raid of 94 goats and sheep from Namoni Aloris village in Kosike Sub County, Nabilatuk District, on August 29, 2023, that were later recovered.
“These firearms were forcefully retrieved from unidentified warriors following a cordon and search operation in Nakabat village, Rupa Sub County, Moroto District. In addition, an SMG rifle with registration number 11253 and five rounds was forcefully recovered from Tingaz village in Alakas, Amudat District,” Longole said.
He appealed to Karacunas in the southern region of Karamoja to embrace the presidential amnesty fully.
“In a concerted effort by security forces to maintain law and order, three firearms were recovered from the South Karamoja region. Despite the ongoing sensitization about the presidential initiative on voluntary firearm surrender without prosecution, the success has been uneven across various districts,” Longole said.
A security source revealed that North Karamoja, including Kotido, Kaabong, Karenga, and Abim, has witnessed positive outcomes with Karamojong youth (Karacunas), voluntarily surrendering arms, the same cannot be said for the southern districts.
The source listed Moroto, Napak, Amudat, and Nakapiripirit as areas that have continued to face challenges in embracing the presidential amnesty, leading to isolated incidents such as cattle thefts, notably between Pokot (Amudat) and Pian (Nabilatuk, Nakapiripirit).
