“You all know where I stay and if there is an order for me to be arrested; here I am and the fact that I am still free shows that either the security fears me or they disobeyed their boss,” he stated.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has condemned threats made by the Chief of Defense Forces General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Kyagulanyi’s statements stemmed from the series of chilling warnings from the  General Muhoozi Kainerugaba on X in the wee hours of January 5, 2024.

General Muhoozi claimed that the only reason the opposition leader stayed alive was because of his father, President Museveni’s intervention.

“Kabobi knows that THE ONLY person protecting him from me is my father. If Mzee was not there, I would cut off his head today!” Muhoozi said.

The general alleged that he and other military generals played a role in positioning Kyagulanyi as a prominent opposition figure to diminish the influence of Dr Kizza Besigye, the long-time opposition leader.

“It was actually our idea (me and other generals). We convinced Mzee that we can use Kabobi to remove Besigye from being the kingpin of the opposition. After we supported him with a lot of money (and he succeeded), he started abusing us,” Muhoozi wrote.

In response to these statements, Kyagulanyi freed himself from these threats and allegations accusing the general of injustice and torture.

“We don’t take threats lightly, and regardless of what he has drunk he is a commander of armed forces and son of the president. I know that the same person has commanded an operation that had many of our people arrested. He is the same person who personally tortured Kakwenza Rukirabashaija,” Kyagulanyi said.

Addressing the press on the subject, at the NUP offices at Makerere Kavule on January 6, 2025, he expressed his free will to be apprehended for the sake of fairness.

“You all know where I stay and if there is an order for me to be arrested; here I am and the fact that I am still free shows that either the security fears me or they disobeyed their boss,” he stated.

However, Kyagulanyi criticized President Museveni’s move to deny suspects police bond, saying that it was ‘unconstitutional’ and showed signs of a dictatorship.

“He (President Museveni) can’t wake up and just make a decree when there are laws and a constitution that governs this country,” Kyagulanyi said.

These controversial statements have sparked outrage and raised serious concerns about Uganda’s political climate by the public and critics.
