The ex-United striker resigned at the end of that campaign, however, and took a year out before joining as an assistant coach to Erik Ten Hag, who was recently sacked from Manchester United.

The former Manchester United midfielder, Paul Scholes, has expressed his backing for Ruud Van Nistelrooy to pursue a managerial career, indicating that the Dutch striker’s current role as interim manager could serve as a platform for more significant opportunities in the future.

Van Nistelrooy’s spell as interim Manchester United manager is coming to an end, with a 2-0 win against POAK thus extending his unbeaten run to three games. Ruben Amorium will arrive on November 11, 2024, but Van Nistelrooy’s future is far more uncertain.

Manchester United legend Scholes thought that the Dutchman has the ability and expertise to be a head coach in his own right, arguing that he is too good to be an assistant coach.

Scholes believed that Van Nistelrooy should take the step back up to a head coach role after seeing Manchester United beat PAOK in the UEFA Europa League, a game that saw Amad Diallo score the only two goals that won the game at Old Trafford.

He commended the Dutchman to seek a new challenge that would allow him to fully exercise his managerial abilities.

“When you have done it and been successful, as he did in PSV Eindhoven, going back to being an assistant must be quite difficult. I think he should be a manager; he just looks like he is made to be a manager to me. I don’t think he should be anybody’s puppet, but I think he is better than an assistant manager,” Scholes explained.

Van Nistelrooy coached former club PSV at youth level before taking over from Roger Schmidt in 2022, winning the KNVB Cup in his first season in charge.
