A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of December 19, 2024, at a motor garage in Mukwenda Zone 1, Makerere Kubiri, along Bombo Road, Central Kampala.

Initial reports show that the fire, which started at around 4:30 a.m., raged for over two hours, left 14 cars reduced to ashes, and caused massive losses to traders operating in the area.

Speaking to the media on Thursday morning, 19 December 2024, Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the extent of the destruction.

“The fire broke out in areas of Mukwenda Zone, Makerere 1, in Wandegeya, in a location that housed a garage, furniture workshop, and various other businesses. Many items were destroyed, including vehicles and mattresses,” Owoyesigyire stated.

However, he confirmed that no injuries or deaths had been registered.

The affected area hosted multiple businesses, including carpentry workshops, tailoring shops, restaurants, and stores, which suffered extensive damage due to the fire’s rapid spread.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire might have been sparked off after a protest by members of a local Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization (SACCO).

They alleged that the SACCO members, angered by their chairperson’s failure to distribute over Shs40 million in annual profits, intentionally set fire to the premises.

Area chairperson, Makerere zone, Juma Kawuma, confirmed that approximately 100 businesses were affected by the fire.

“The fire started at around 4:30 a.m. We called the fire brigade, who arrived on time, but due to the congestion in the area, the fire spread very quickly. Around 11 cars that were undergoing repairs were burnt,” Kawuma said.

Police investigations into the cause of the fire continue, with authorities urging the public to remain calm and cooperate with the investigative team.
