Rukungiri: Police Arrest Two Suspects, Recover Stolen Vehicle Number Plates

The police in Rukungiri municipality conducted an intelligence-led operation in response to an increase in vehicle number plate thefts.

Police in Rukungiri have arrested two suspects in connection with the theft of vehicle number plates.

ACP Kituuma Rusoke, the police spokesperson, while addressing the media on the general security situation in the country at the police headquarters in Naguru on July 29, 2024, said that, on July 25, 2024, police in Rukungiri municipality conducted an intelligence-led operation in response to an increase in vehicle number plate thefts.

According to Rusoke, the operation led to the arrest of two suspects identified as Brian Mujuni and Anthony Arinaitwe.

“The operation also led to the recovery of the stolen vehicle number plates, which included UAS 842V and UBQ 0131T, which were stolen in June 2024, and UBA 458C and UBD 908K, stolen on July 20, 2024, and UBB 279S, stolen on July 21, 2024,” Rusoke said.

He further said that the stolen number plates were recovered with the help of the arrested suspects.

Police noted that the operation is still ongoing to combat the trend and advised car owners to use vehicle tracking devices and fleet monitoring systems. Police further warned mechanics and dealers who facilitate these crimes to stop the act.

In a related development, on January 10, 2023, the joint security task force in Fort Portal city arrested three suspects in connection with the theft of vehicle number plates. The operation demonstrates the police’s commitment to tracking property crime and ensuring public safety.
