Rukungiri PFF Members Endorse Besigye for 2026 Presidency Despite Detention, Announce Protest

A section of People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) members in Rukungiri district has endorsed Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye as their presidential candidate for the 2026 general elections, despite his continued detention since November 2024.

The endorsement took place during a press conference at Rozera Gardens in Rukungiri Municipality, led by PFF District Chairperson Alosius Mugarura. The event was attended by key party figures, including the PFF Vice Chairperson for Western Uganda and former MP for Rukungiri Municipality Hon. Roland Kaginda Mugume who had organized the presser, and the former Woman MP for Rukungiri District Hon. Betty Muzanira.

The PFF leaders defended their decision by citing historical precedence, stating that Besigye had previously been nominated while in prison during the 2006 elections. They reaffirmed their commitment to front him as their flag bearer regardless of his current status.

Besigye and Hajji Abed Rutale were reportedly abducted in Nairobi, Kenya, on November 16, 2024, and have remained under detention since.

During the press conference, Mugarura announced a peaceful demonstration scheduled for Wednesday, June 11, 2025, in Rukungiri Municipality. The protest is aimed at demanding the release of Besigye and Rutale, as well as calling for democratic reforms. Residents were urged to join the protest to reclaim their district’s dignity and push for a peaceful transition.

Mugarura also celebrated the official registration and certification of the People’s Front for Freedom as a political party. He said the new phase presents an opportunity for the party leadership to correct past mistakes and offer Ugandans a more democratic and accountable future.

Hon. Kaginda expressed concern over what he termed an increasing wave of political repression by the government. He called on all Ugandans, especially leaders who once shared the liberation struggle with Besigye, including Gen. Jim Muhwezi and Gen. Henry Tumukunde, to rise above political differences and speak out.

Kaginda also revealed his interest in re-contesting the Rukungiri Municipality parliamentary seat on the PFF ticket, although he emphasized that he is ready to support any other candidate the party may endorse to maintain unity.

Hon. Betty Muzanira applauded Ugandans under the PFF banner for achieving official party status and encouraged citizens to remain steadfast in the pursuit of freedom by electing leaders who prioritize the public good over personal interests.
