Rubaga Hospital has acquired the first organ transplant centre.

Named after Dr. Rita Moser, a German national who once worked at the facility as the head between 1970 and 1998, the centre was built at a cost of one billion shillings.

While launching the facility, Dr. Julius Luyimbazi, the in-charge of Rubaga Hospital, said the centre will offer both kidney and liver transplant services.

He adds that they will continue collaborating with Mulago National Referral Hospital and other partners from India and Kenya to guarantee effective services.

Dr. Michael Okello, a senior medical staff member at the facility, is hopeful that the centre will save many Ugandans from travelling abroad.

“Even if we do one transplant a month or so, it’s better than nothing, so the most important thing is to start,” Dr. Michael said.

In May 2023, Uganda legalised human organ transplants after President Yoweri Museveni signed a bill into law.
