Rotary Club Launches 12th Edition Cancer Run to Raise Funds for New Treatment Center

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in charge of Regional Affairs, John Mulimba has launched the Rotary cancer run to be held on Sunday, July 27, 2023. The launch was held at the Wapakhabulo Auditorium at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

While at the launch, Mulimba appreciated Rotary for the support towards fighting cancer.

“First and foremost, I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to the Rotary Organization for their tireless dedication to serving our communities for decades,” Mulimba said.

Mulimba said that, Rotary has been at the forefront of humanitarian efforts, making a profound impact on countless lives worldwide.

“Today, we come together to harness that same spirit of compassion and determination to tackle the scourge of Cancer,” he said.

“This event marks a significant milestone in our collective efforts to fight against one of the most formidable adversaries humanity has ever faced-Cancer,” Mulimba noted.

He revealed that, the theme for the 2023 Cancer run is “Close the Care Gap: Uniting our voices and taking action.”

According to Mulimba, in May 2023, Government procured a new state-of-the-art Radiotherapy Treatment Machine which provides the latest in radiotherapy technology, delivering precise and effective treatment for patients. Through this, there are plans to increase the number of Patient Beds capacity from 120 to 365 Beds at the Cancer Institute.

The Uganda Rotary Club is targeting to raise Ugx 2Bn in the cancer run and it starts from Kololo Independence Grounds with 40 other towns and cities targeting over 50,000 runners nationwide.

This edition’s funds are to construct a fully-fledged cancer treatment center at Nsambya Hospital with over 36 beds.

One of the primary goals of the Cancer Rotary Run is to raise funds to support vital Cancer Research Initiatives that push the boundaries of Medical knowledge, leading to improved treatment options, early detection methods, and ultimately, a cure for Cancer.
