Old Kampala Police has arrested a Uganda Peoples Defense Force (UPDF) soldier who was in possession of USD 40000 counterfeit dollars.
The arrest of Kenneth Nkurunungi, 36, was confirmed in a police press release dated October 13, 2023.
According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, on October 12, 2023, at approximately 8:00 PM, Nkurunungi was apprehended at Namayiba Bus Terminal, Zone One, Kampala Central District.
“The operation was provoked by actionable intelligence regarding a resident of Buyanja Sub-county, Rukungiri district, later identified as Nkurunungi, who had a small box containing
counterfeit black dollars,” Owoyesigire said.
Upon investigations, Owoyesigire said that the package of counterfeit currency was intended to be transported to Juba through the Classic Bus, and one Musa Adam, currently in
Juba contacted Nkurunugi on October 12, 2023, and instructed him to meet an unknown individual in town to receive the package.
Owoyesigire said the exchange occurred near Total Katwe, where Kenneth received the sealed box and proceeded with it to Namayiba Bus Terminal, where he handed it over to Harriet, a staff member of Classic Bus, who acknowledged the package.
“Kenneth was called back to retrieve the package because the Classic Bus officials had left it behind. Police officers intervened and arrested Nkurunungi. Upon inspection, it was confirmed that the money in the box was counterfeit black dollars, amounting to USD 40,000,” Owoyesigire said.
ASP Owoyesigyire said investigations into the case are ongoing and the police will
provide further details on the matter.
Nkurunungi officially retired from the General Headquarters, Bombo, in 2008, and currently serves as a military trainer in Juba, South Sudan. However, Kenneth returned to Uganda for a vacation on August 19, 2023, with plans to return to Juba on September 19, 2023, but extended his stay.
