Residents Demand Removal of Dangerous Roadblock on Masaka-Bukakata Road

Residents and district leaders in Bukakata Sub County, Masaka District, have called for the urgent removal of a roadblock established by the Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU) on the Masaka-Bukakata road.

The roadblock, which features sharp metallic spikes, has become a deadly hazard, contributing to numerous accidents and fatalities among road users.

It was set up as part of efforts to combat illegal fishing activities; however, it has now become a threat for those who use the road, which connects Masaka District to Kalangala.

Many passengers and residents revealed that the spikes on the roadblock are a death trap and have led to many people losing their lives after accidentally crashing into them, most especially at night.

The locals made these remarks on August 13, 2024, after three pastors from the Adventist church were severely injured when they hit the spikes while returning home from overnight prayers and were taken to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital in a very critical condition because they had sustained severe head injuries.

The boda boda they were traveling on rammed into these spiky roadblocks, and they hit their heads on the road.

According to residents, the FPU sets up the roadblock at night, obstructing the entire road and leaving only a narrow passage for vehicles; however, there are no reflectors or warning signs to alert drivers of the impending danger ahead, and this has resulted in tragic accidents.

In an interview, one local identified as Annet Wagaba revealed that since the beginning of 2024, more than 17 people have reportedly died due to accidents related to this roadblock.

She called on President Museveni to intervene and order either the removal of the roadblock or the installation of proper signage to warn drivers of its presence.

Wagaba added that the roadblock was put up to fight illegal fishing, but currently it is jeopardizing the lives and safety of road users.

’’If FPU does not want to remove the roadblock, then it should put road signs warning road users about a roadblock ahead so that their lives are not put in danger,’’ Wabigaba disclosed.

Amid the mounting apprehensions, the district leaders have promised to interact with the relevant authorities to tackle the matter, stressing the importance of a well-rounded strategy that places equal emphasis on safeguarding fisheries and ensuring community safety.
