The Church of Uganda (COU), in a statement released on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, has cautioned the public against carrying out any business with Erich Kasirye, who has been masquerading as the Anglican Chaplain of KCCA, and using that self-appointed title to publish false stories about the church.

According to the Provincial Secretary of Church of Uganda, Rev. Canon William Ongeng, the church was contacted by KCCA, inquiring about Kasirye being a staff of COU.

Rev. Ongeng added that, Kasirye was originally ordained in Busoga Diocese, however, Namirembe Diocese no longer considers him to be a priest of the Diocese, and neither is he a chaplain at Kampala Diocese.

“Kasirye is not an official spokesperson for church of Uganda, he is not a communications officer for church of Uganda, and he was never appointed a Canon by the Church of Uganda. He is a self-appointed Canon, and a self-appointed Chaplain to KCCA,” Ongeng said.

Rev. Oneng noted that Kasirye was defrocked with the 2nd Bishop of West Buganda Diocese, Christopher Ssenyonjo, known for his active support of LGBTQ. He was defrocked in 2008 for presiding at a consecration as “Bishop” of a rebel priest into no-existent denomination.

“Kasirye worked with Ssenyonjo in LGBTQ support organizations because of the funding he got and presumably believed in the cause,” Rev. Oneng noted.

The Provincial Secretary further revealed that, Kasirye has a long history of deception and lacks integrity, adding that, he is not a communication officer for the church. The church distances itself from anything he says or writes, and the public is urged to disregard the information he prints.
