President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has instructed the Special Forces Command (SFC) to rebuild Isunga Police Station in Kagadi district, a site of historical importance in Uganda’s liberation struggle.
The President issued the directive on March 21, 2025 during a stopover at the station while on his performance assessment tour in the Bunyoro Sub-region.
“I am going to send engineers of SFC, under the SFC Commander , Maj Gen David Mugisha, and State House Comptroller, Ms. Jane Barekye, to oversee the reconstruction,’’ Museveni stated.
According to Museveni the need to preserve the station’s historical value draws back on the events of February 6, 1981, when he and his comrades launched an armed struggle against the government of Milton Obote with just 27 guns.
Museveni further revealed that the RPG gun was a valuable addition to the limited weapons they had captured during their initial attack on Kabamba Barracks.
After capturing military equipment, they advanced through Kagadi to Isunga Police Station, where they successfully overran the station and seized an RPG-7B gun.
The directive is part of the government’s broader initiative to preserve sites important to Uganda’s liberation history while enhancing local infrastructure.
During his March 2025 tour of Bunyoro, Museveni also pleged to establish a new police station at Isumba Sub-county headquarters and donated UG X 300 million to the Birembo war veterans.
The upgrade strengthens Museveni’s narrative of the National Resistance Army’s (NRA) pivotal role in Uganda’s liberation, positioning the station as a powerful symbol of resistance against authoritarian regimes.
Strengthening police infrastructure in Kagadi aligns with Museveni’s focus on enhancing grassroots security and supporting Parish Development Model (PDM) initiatives, which aim to empower local communities economically.
Additionally the establishment of new police stations, such as the one pledged for Isumba Sub-county, along with the financial support to war veterans, reinforces the government’s focus on strengthening the security apparatus and contributing to local economic growth.
