President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has pledged to compensate more than 500 people that were displaced from Buikwe district during the 1981-1986 bush war.

In a letter dated June 24, 2023, addressed to the Attorney General, Kiryowa Kiwanuka, the President said that, the victims should be compensated with over Shs 58Billion.

“I therefore, direct the Attorney General to engage the National Association of Displaced People headed by Oyuk to see this problem solved. Getting the original bibanja may be a problem, but they should be compensated for getting caught up in Elite wars yet they were just peasants,” President Museveni said.

This follows two letters written in 2013 and 2014 by Harriet Nankabirwa, the Coordinator of NRM in Buikwe district seeking for help of the displaced persons.

On receiving the letter from President Museveni, she assured residents on how their problems had been answered, noting that the President cannot fail to fulfil his promises.

Residents expressed their gratitude towards the President Museveni’s initiative saying that they will have a place they call home once compensated.

“If I get the money promised, I will buy land because I have no resting place for me and my people, in case we breathe our last,” a resident said.

People that were affected by displacement were mainly from the Uganda People’s Congress and these included Japadolah, Bagisu, and Bagwere.
