A total of 50 UPDF officers have been promoted by the Commander in Chief of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, President Yoweri K. Museveni.
Brig. Felix Kulayigye, the UPDF Spokesperson, said on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, that both junior and senior officers have benefited from the recent promotion.
He says five officers, including Jimmy N. Musoke, John Patrick Otongo, James Muhwezi, Richard Rubongoya, and Wycliff Ruterana Keita, were promoted from the rank of Colonel to Brigadier General.
According to him, a total of 17 officers, including Justus Kambale Musenene, Joseph Magira Wasibi, Israel Kaheru Bagenda, Herman W. Mukasa, Patrick Opira, Richard Butungi, John Mango Baraza, James Muhumuza, Robert Koch, Rukonge Victor Busobozi, Eliasson Kugumisiriza, Peter Musherure, Saul Bishuuba Nabimanya, Collins Ainomugisha, George Jet Turyabe, and Lydia Nandutu, were promoted from Lieutenant Colonel to Colonel.
Brig. Kulaigye said five other officers, including Edson Tumusiime, Robert A. Okoya, Samuel M. Kasede, Albert Mwebembezi, and Fred Bwandasa, who had been holding the rank of acting Lieutenant Colonel, were confirmed.
He said some officers were also promoted from the rank of Major to Lieutenant Colonel. The officers included Paul Rwabishari Ampe, Benon B. Byakurama, Emmy Nuwagira Kafureeka, Godfrey R. Rwakashaija, Winston Agaba, Sebastiano Chombe, Levi Masereka Mbauta, Douglas Muhwezi, and James Yairo Waiswa, while Dennis Damba, James O. Omara, and Isaac Mutungi, who had previously held the rank of acting major, were confirmed.
According to the list, two other officers, including Titus Lwanyaga Nyanzi and Isaac Sajjabi, were promoted from captain to major, while acting captain Moses Murijo was confirmed as a full captain.
Some seven officers holding the rank of second lieutenant, including Martin E. Cheptoyek, Samuel Akol, Kenneth Kaunda Bongomin, Asuman Wabwire, Ediger Koojo, Allan Akampurira, and Junior Agaba, were promoted to full lieutenant.
Section 18 of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Act 2005 grants President Museveni the authority to promote army officers within the UPDF.
