President-elect Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed Dr Flavian Zeija as the new Chief Justice of Uganda, following his nomination and approval in accordance with the Constitution.
Dr Zeija takes over the country’s top judicial office after the retirement of former Chief Justice Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny-Dollo, who exited office upon reaching the mandatory retirement age.
In an official letter dated Thursday, January 22nd, 2026, the President said the appointment follows the submission of Hon Justice Flavian Zeija’s name to the Parliament of Uganda for approval which it duly granted with in accordance with the Constitution.
The appointment places Dr Zeija at the helm of the Judiciary, where he will preside over the Supreme Court and oversee the administration of justice nationwide.
Prior to his appointment, Dr Zeija appeared before Parliament’s Committee on Appointments, chaired by Speaker Anita Annet Among, where he was vetted and subsequently approved for the position.
Dr Zeija is a seasoned jurist with decades of experience in the legal profession. He has previously served as Deputy Chief Justice, Principal Judge, and as a judge of the High Court, as well as in academic and legal practice roles.
As Chief Justice, Dr Zeija is expected to provide strategic leadership to the Judiciary, enhance judicial efficiency, and uphold the independence of the courts at a time of heightened public scrutiny of governance and the rule of law.
His appointment takes immediate effect.
