The International Day for Older Persons Celebrations on Sunday October 1, 2023, at Humura Primary School Playground started with the guest of honor, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja who represented President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni commissioning the newly constructed administration block for Kyegegwa district at the district headquarters.

The Prime Minister congratulated the district leadership over the milestone and also launched the construction of the District Women Council Office block.

The Prime Minister, later proceeded to Humura Primary School to preside over the International Day for Older Persons Celebrations.

“The Government is currently implementing a number of social economic transformation programs for the older persons including the Social Assistance Grants for Empowerment (SAGE) and Special Enterprise Grant for Older Persons (SEGOP).” The Prime Minister said in her speech.

Nabbanja thanked Older Persons for their contribution to the development of Uganda and urged them to embrace the norm of saving and to always avoid land fragmentation.

The celebration was graced by the area Members of Parliament, among other dignitaries.

In his speech, the Deputy Attorney General and Member of Parliament for Kyaka South, Jackson Kafuuzi urged the Prime Minister to provide the town of Kyegegwa with enough street lights because it has a lot of darkness at night.

The Chairperson on the Parliamentary Committee of Gender Labour and Social Development and also the Woman Member of Parliament for Kyegegwa district, Flavia Rwabuhoro thanked the Ministry of Gender for granting Kyegegwa a chance to host the IDOP celebrations, the maiden National function to be celebrated in the district.

“Older people are invaluable sources of knowledge and experience, but ageism runs rampant in societies.  We must ensure their full participation and honor their essential contributions towards peace, sustainable development and the protection of our planet,” Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary General said in his message for the International Day for Older Persons Celebration.

Kyegegwa district was host to the International Day for Older Persons Celebrations at Humura Primary School Playground. The celebrations were presided over by the Premier.

On December 14, 1990, the United Nations General Assembly designated October 1st the International Day of Older Persons (IDOP).

The 2023 IDOP was celebrated under the theme, Fulfilling the promises of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for Older Persons, Across Generations, a call to draw attention to the unique needs of older people globally.
