North Kyoga Police is set to investigate the cause of the high crime rate registered in the region as reflected in the national crime rate report.
In an interview with a nexus reporter, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema said they are yet to probe and determine possible reasons for the highest crime rate.
According to the police crime report released on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, out of the 29 policing regions in Uganda, the North Kyoga region registered the highest number of cases in 2023.
The region recorded 17,995 cases, followed by Rwizi with 16,987 cases, KMP North with 15,920 cases, KMP South with 15,348 cases, and the Albertine region with 12,548 cases.
In 2022, North Kyoga registered a total of 17605 cases, making the region the highest out of the 29 regions.
The latest 2023 police annual crime report shows that theft has maintained its position as the leading crime committed in Uganda, with over 60,000 cases registered.
The report shows the number of reported cases decreased by 1.5% from 231,653 in 2022 to 228,074 in 2023.
Okema attributed the high crime rate in the region to the fact that it has one of the largest territorial area to cover. Districts and divisions in the North Kyoga Region include; Alebtong, Amolatar, Apac, Dokolo, Kole, Kwania, Lira Rural, Lira City East, Lira City West, Otuke, and Oyam
