Uganda Police is set to carry out operations against drunk driving in Kampala on Friday, August 18, 2023, extending to the weekend.

This development was confirmed by the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango.

“Tonight, we are going to carry out a trial operation on drink drive within Kampala Metropolitan Police area,” Onyango said.

He advised drunk drivers to opt for the passenger seat or take a cab to where they are going to avoid being detained.

This follows the recent re-introduction of Breathalyzer machine to test alcohol levels consumed by motorists, as a countermeasure against road traffic accidents caused by drunk drivers.

Breathalyzers were halted due to Covid-19 in 2020, because they would have widely contributed to the spread of the virus in the process. However, the  new machines will come with separate, sealed, and disposable tubes to blow through for each road user.

According to a Police report, Uganda has registered an increase in the number of Road Traffic accidents, with 40% being fatal, due to drunk driving.
