The police have released the 2024 crime report in which it recorded a 4.1 percent decrease.

While launching the report at the police headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, the Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, pledged the force is prepared to deliver a free, fair, and safe election.

The report indicates a decrease in reported cases from 228,074 in 2023 to 218,715 in 2024, reflecting progress in crime prevention and law enforcement efforts.

Speaking at the launch in Naguru, IGP Byakagaba attributed the decline to improved policing strategies and public cooperation. “I wish to commend the good coordination we have built with other stakeholders, including the office of the Director of Public Prosecution, the judiciary, JLOS, local councils, security agencies like UPDF, prisons, ISO, ESO, and both local and international organizations,” Byakagaba said.

IGP Byakagaba also announced plans to deploy 18 police officers in each sub-county to decentralize services, enhance crime prevention, and improve response times.

He commended the good coordination built by different stakeholders in terms of cooperation and collaboration, which explains the achievements. Uganda police continues to register in dealing with crimes to uphold law and order hence creating a conducive environment for development

AIGP Tom Magambo, the Director of Criminal Investigation, warned those who intend to cause violence before, during, and after the 2026 elections not to dare attempt it at all.

AIGP Magambo warned government officials against corruption, saying they risk being arrested.

“I want to assure Ugandans that if you are caught missing public funds, we will one day land on you, and you will surely go to jail.” Magambo warned

The 2024 Annual Crime Report also revealed that, out of every 100,000 people, 476 fell victim to crime. Additionally, 81,750 cases were taken to court, with 26,328 resulting in convictions, 43,579 still pending in court, and 90,663 under inquiry.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations reported a 1.6% increase in economic and corruption-related crimes, with 13,132 cases recorded in 2024 compared to 12,924 in 2023.

The report highlighted a 4% decrease in domestic violence cases, with 14,073 cases reported in 2024 compared to 14,681 in 2023. Similarly, sex-related crimes dropped by 2.8%, from 14,846 cases in 2023 to 14,425 in 2024.

According to the report, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, crashes increased by 6.4% in 2024, with 25,107 crashes recorded. The directorate also reported a 19.2% decrease in common traffic offenses, with cases dropping from 528,825 in 2023 to 426,432 in 2024. This was attributed to reckless driving and non-compliance with traffic regulations, calling for stronger enforcement and public awareness campaigns.
