The Kampala Metropolitan Police are investigating circumstances under which two 22-year-old builders died after they were fatally hit by the gate they were putting up in Wakiso district.

This incident, which happened at around 8:00 p.m. in Bunamwaya-Katale cell in Kyengera Sub County, Wakiso district, claimed the lives of Joseph Mugerwa and David Semakula, aged 22 years, both residents of Nyanama.

During an interview with journalists on July 26, 2024, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigire, confirmed the accident and said that the bodies of the deceased were taken to Mulago Hospital for postmortem examinations as investigations were going on.

Owoyesigire added that as soon as the two builders were brutally hit by the gate, the locals hurried to rescue them, but they were already dead due to the impact from the heavy gate and its slab.

’’It is alleged that Mugwerwa and Semakula were gravely hit by the gate after its slab collapsed on them as they were working due to the weak and small gauged iron bars they used to support it; however, investigations are going on so that we can ascertain whether they died from their negligence or if other factors were involved,’’ Owoyesigire disclosed.

He added that building collapses and construction site accidents have been an ongoing issue in Uganda.

In June 2023, a school perimeter wall collapsed in Kampala, killing six street children.
