Uganda is grappling with a troubling series of student disappearances that have alarmed both the public and authorities.

In June 2025, Elson Tumwine, a third-year student at Makerere University, went missing while on an internship in Hoima. He resurfaced in mid-July, only to be charged under Uganda’s Computer Misuse Act over a controversial TikTok video, drawing renewed attention to his disappearance and detention.

In late October 2025, Joel Niwarinda, a 15-year-old Senior Two student at Nyabikoni Secondary School in Kabale Municipality, was reported missing after last being seen earlier that month. Despite a police report, he remains untraced.

Then, in early November 2025, a Senior Two student from Naalya Secondary School, identified as Melisa (also reported as Aneza) Merisa, went missing. Weeks later, a decomposed body discovered in Musaale swamp in Mukono was confirmed through DNA testing to be hers, prompting the Kampala Metropolitan Police to launch a murder investigation.

The recent disappearance of Nathan Tuwandike adds to a troubling pattern of student vanishings in Uganda, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated action by authorities, educational institutions, and the public to ensure vigilance and protective measures that safeguard young people.
