Police Investigate Two Separate Murder Cases in Soroti, Serere

The territorial police in East Kyoga and Soroti East division are currently looking for a group of chapatti sellers in connection with the alleged torture and death of Opio Musa.

SCP Fred Enanga, the Police Spokesperson, in a press release of November 14, 2023, said that Opio was accused of stealing a table that belonged to Busulwa.

He said that the incident happened on November 10, 2023, in Asinge cell, Madera ward in Soroti East division whereby four suspects who include Busulwa, Otim, Oparo, Rafael and others caught the victim, dragged him to a eucalyptus forest between Compswahili and Madera,  brutally beat him up then dragged him back and dumped his body in the trading center.

Enanga said that, after being discovered by the police, he was taken to the hospital and later passed away.

In another incident, police in East Kyoga region and Serere Central Police Station have in custody Moses Osapa for the murder of his female acquaintance who he fatally stabbed in the right ribcage with a knife on November 7, 2023.

“Moses a 38-year-old resident of Pingire landing site in Serere district, was a boyfriend to Asekenye Stella, alias Hellen, aged 22 and were in a romantic relationship for three months,” Enanga said.

Enanga further said that, on November 7, 2023, at Karamajong village, Stella got into a confrontation with the suspect, who confiscated her clothes and this made her pick his solar panel.

He noted that, their issue was brought to the attention of the LC1 and rectified, adding that, however, after a short while, the suspect tracked his girlfriend to her room and gave her a knife stab wound to the right ribcage.

Enanga said that, the victim was rushed to Serere Health Centre IV, but died four days later, on November 11, 2023, at around 8am.

Police said that, despite his efforts to escape, the suspect was arrested from Amakio village.

According to Uganda Bureau of Statistics 2021 report, Gender-based violence (GBV) is an everyday threat for Ugandan women and girls. The National demographic data from 2020 revealed that 56% of married women aged 15-49 reported having suffered physical and/or sexual violence by a husband.

Recent statistics in Uganda also show that 30% of women or one of every three women is a victim of physical and or sexual domestic violence at least once in their lifetime.
