Police Investigate Deadly Lorry Accident in Isingiro District

The Territorial Police in Rakai is investigating circumstances under which ten people died in a single fatal accident on their way for burial in Isingiro district.

According to a press statement released on March 27, 2024, by SP Kananura Michael, the Spokesperson of the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, on March 26, 2024, at around 1:30 pm, a fatal accident involving a motor vehicle with the number plate UAP 559X Canter Lorry occurred at Kiganda village along Kyarurangira-Isingiro Road, killing ten people and severely injuring several others.

SP Kananura said that according to preliminary investigations, the Canter truck was carrying 35 people and was heading to Isingiro for a burial. However, when they reached Kiganda village, the driver lost control and the truck overturned, killing 10 people instantly and fatally injuring 25 others.

SP Kananura added that the traffic police responded to the scene immediately, and the bodies of the deceased were taken to Kyalulangira Health Centre III for postmortem examination.

“The injured were taken to the same hospital for first aid but were later transferred to Rakai Hospital for better medical attention and treatment,” SP Kananura said.

He further added that the driver who was driving the truck that caused the accident ran away after it happened, and the police are also looking for him to aid in the investigations.
