Police in Kampala have intercepted a numberless saloon car that was loaded with materials for making improvised explosive devices.

SCP Fred Enanga, the spokesperson, said the vehicle reportedly traveled from the Mutukula border and was intercepted from Kibuye roundabout on Sunday, August 20, 2023, by the police patrol team.

“When the vehicle came to a stop, it prompted the occupant in the co-driver’s seat to quickly open the door and flee, but it was discovered with two boxes of explosives that can be used to make improvised explosive devices,” said Enanga.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Bernard Chemutai, according to Enanga.

Preliminary findings indicate that the duo smuggled the explosives from the Mutukula border in Kyotera district.

“We shall widen our investigations to see where they got the explosives and where they were taking them,” Enanga said.

Security will also try to establish circumstances under which a numberless vehicle carrying such dangerous weapons could move for a distance of over 220km from the border to the city center without notice, despite the various snap checkpoints along the Kampala-Masaka Highway.
